Questions

How much does it cost to start an LLC?

The state side runs from $35 in Montana to $870 in California, counting the filing fee and the state taxes and steps we could put a figure on. A registered agent, if you hire one, is extra: Mainstay Filing, our best overall pick, includes the agent, the EIN application and annual-report filing in $199.

Is an EIN free?

Yes. The IRS issues an EIN online at no charge (IRS page, checked October 21, 2026).

What are the extras?

Only 6 states have a required extra we could verify: Arizona, California, Kentucky, Nebraska, New York and Rhode Island. They are publication in some states and a yearly state tax in others.

Do I have to hire a registered agent?

Most states require an agent with an in-state street address, and some allow you to act as your own. Each budget page says which applies.

Why is the first-year total higher than the filing fee?

The filing fee only creates the company. The budget adds anything the state requires in the first year and, in the right-hand column, a service that keeps the company in good standing.
